The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) is asking that Russian mail services not be used when registering and managing domain names. This is stated in a letter from the Counterintelligence Protection of State Interests in the Information Security Sphere department of the SBU to the Internet Association of Ukraine, dated June 13.
The letter, published on the InAU website, states that the department found violations of current legislation by the owners of domain names in the “*ua”, “*укр” zones, including “gov.ua”.
The SBU states that mail services from the Russian companies Yandex and Mail.ru, which are under sanctions, are being used to manage domain names.
The SBU department is asking InAU to carry out explanatory work with domain name registrars regarding restrictions on the use of Russian mail services when registering and managing domain names.
Recall that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko put into effect, on May 15, a decision by the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine on the application of special economic and other restrictive measures (sanctions). The sanctions list includes 467 legal entities.
In particular, the decree bans internet providers from providing access to the Russian sites Yandex, Dr.Web, Kaspersky Lab, Mail.ru, and the social networks Odnoklassniki and Vkontakte. “Ban on internet providers providing internet users access to the resources of Mail.ru (www.mail.ru) and the socially oriented resources Vkontakte (www.vk.com) and Odnoklassniki (www.ok.ru),” the description of the sanctions against Mail.ru states.
Access to Yandex.Maps, Yandex.Video, as well as the company’s web analytics resources, is also banned. The sanctions also cover the 1C company, which specializes in the distribution, support, and development of computer programs and databases for business and home use.
